Winter Sun Destinations From UK: 14 Scored on Heat and £

Quick Answer

Most families start this search by picking a temperature and working backwards to a flight. Across the 14 destinations below, December daytime highs run from 16.1°C to 28.6°C for the same week of the year (as of September 2026, source: World Meteorological Organization), a wider spread than the flight times would lead you to expect. Start with the month grid, then price your own dates in the family budget calculator.

Winter Sun Destinations From the UK: 14 Ranked for Families (2026/27)

Every figure here comes from a national meteorological service, an airport's own route page or a seller's published price. Read across a row and you see what the heat costs in flying time and money.

Every price in the table is a lead-in per person for two adults sharing over seven nights, the unit UK sellers lead with. Priced against real dates, four-seat totals do exist: on 2 September 2026 the cheapest published Tenerife week for two adults and children aged 6 and 10, seven nights in mid-January 2027, was £1,194 in total from Manchester with Jet2holidays, self-catering with a free child place, and £1,568 in total from London Gatwick with TUI, self-catering (as of September 2026, sources: Jet2holidays and TUI). The table stays per person so every row is one unit. Board basis and departure date sit in each cell.

1. Madeira (Funchal)

21 out of 25 · the short-haul all-rounder

Madeira wins on the boring virtues. December days average 20.0°C and February still holds 19.1°C (as of September 2026, source: World Meteorological Organization), the flattest November-to-February curve of any European row. The flight is four hours, and the lead-in week was £481 per person, bed and breakfast, departing 30 November 2026 (as of September 2026, source: Hays Travel). It's not a bucket-and-spade island. That's the trade.

2. Costa del Sol (Málaga)

20 out of 25 · the shortest flight with real infrastructure

Three hours ten minutes from Manchester, 17.5°C in December and 17.7°C in February (as of September 2026, sources: Manchester Airport and Agencia Estatal de Meteorología). That's jumper weather, not swimming weather, and we'd rather say so than sell it as tropical. What you get is a short transfer, year-round restaurants and a half-board week from £510 per person. Our Costa del Sol guide covers which resort towns stay open in winter.

3. Marrakech

19 out of 25 · warmth without the beach

Four hours from Manchester for 20.2°C December days and 20.7°C in February (as of September 2026, sources: Manchester Airport and World Meteorological Organization), beating every mainland European row here. Nights are cold and pools unheated at this price point, so it's a city break with sun rather than a sun holiday. The lead-in all-inclusive week was £615 per person.

How the ETP Winter Sun Score Works (Heat, Hours, £, Half-Term Fit)

Five factors, each scored 0 to 5, for a maximum of 25. Every anchor below is one you can check yourself against the same public sources.

The five factors

Four totals are shared by more than one row, so ties break on the warmer December average first, then on the shorter flight. That is what puts Marrakech above the Algarve and Majorca on 19, Sal above Tenerife and Malta on 18, Antigua above Dubai and Paphos on 17, and Cancún above Antalya on 15. Every rank in the table reproduces from those two rules.

The score is our editorial weighting, not a law of nature. It treats a short flight and a cheap week as worth as much as raw heat, which is why a 20°C Atlantic island outranks a 28°C Caribbean one. If your family would fly nine hours for swimming weather, read the heat column first and ignore the totals. Method notes: how we research.

Where Is Hot in December, January, February and March? The Month Grid

This is the table that decides most winter bookings, because the month a school calendar gives you moves the answer more than the shortlist does.

Antalya21.216.714.915.417.7
Warmest February on the grid is Cancún at 28.7°C; coolest is Antalya at 15.4°C. Figures are climatological normals for the three Spanish stations from Agencia Estatal de Meteorología and, for the other eleven rows, from the World Meteorological Organization (as of September 2026). No met service in this set publishes a comparable monthly sea-temperature normal, so this grid is air temperature only.

Here's the crossover that catches people out. Malta and the Costa del Sol share the same November average, 20.1°C, then part company for the rest of the winter: by February the Costa del Sol runs 17.7°C and Malta 15.5°C, and Malta doesn't recover in March. Book Malta for October half term and it's a cheap warm week. Book the same hotel for February and you've bought a city break with a sea view.

Antalya does it harder: 21.2°C in November, 14.9°C in January, which is why it sits last despite a £504 week, and why our Turkey family holidays guide is built around summer. The long-haul rows barely move, and our Caribbean islands in December by age guide takes those December details island by island.

Where Is Hot and Cheap in Winter? What a Week Costs per Degree of Warmth

The useful question is not what a week costs. It's what a degree costs. So we divided each published lead-in week by the degrees its December average sits above 15°C, roughly where a UK family stops calling it sun. A ratio from two published numbers, not a quote.

Table 3: published week price per degree of December warmth above 15°C.

Antalya16.71.7£504£296
Algarve16.71.7£512£301
Majorca16.11.1£509£463
The spread runs from £72 to £463 per extra degree, a factor of more than six. Five destinations come in under £100 a degree, and only two of them are four and a half hours or less from Manchester (as of September 2026, sources: Hays Travel and World Meteorological Organization).

Look what that does to the cheap end. Majorca has the shortest flight and one of the lowest published weeks, yet it is the most expensive warmth here by a distance, because 16.1°C in December is barely warmth. Egypt's Red Sea is the opposite: a mid-range price buys 23.2°C, and the maths lands at £72 a degree.

We'll be blunt about the long-haul rows. Antigua and Cancún look decent per degree, at £125 and £119, but they carry the two highest absolute prices and the two longest flights, so the value only shows up if your family actually swims. Buy the heat if you'll use it.

Short-Haul Winter Sun: The Four-Hour Radius

Seven of the 14 are four and a half hours or less from Manchester, from Majorca at 2h 45m up to Tenerife at 4h 30m, with Madeira and Marrakech both at exactly 4h 00m (as of September 2026, source: Manchester Airport). Paphos and Antalya add another fifteen minutes.

Majorca beach resort seafront, the shortest winter sun flight from the UK and the row that cools fastest by February

Majorca is the honest test case for that radius, and it fails in winter: 2h 45m away, 16.1°C in December, much of the resort strip shut between November and Easter. Treat it as a May-to-October island. Our Majorca family holidays guide is written for that season, and the same caveat covers most of the Algarve outside Albufeira and Vilamoura.

The Canaries are the exception inside the radius, and the reason is latitude rather than luck. Tenerife holds 22.8°C in December and never drops below 21.7°C all winter, the warmest a UK family can reach in under five hours. Which island you pick is a separate call: our Canary Islands family holidays guide ranks the four, so this page treats the group as one row and hands you over. To line up a day out, open Tenerife family excursions in a second tab.

Where Do Brits Actually Go for Winter Sun?

Spain, overwhelmingly. GB residents made an estimated 17.8 million visits to Spain in 2024, ahead of France on 9.3 million and Italy on 4.8 million, out of 94.6 million UK visits abroad (as of September 2026, source: Office for National Statistics). The Canaries carry much of the winter half of that, which is why the Spanish rows here have the most flight choice from regional airports.

What the numbers can't tell you is which property people book once they've picked a country. That's the job of our forthcoming cheap winter sun all-inclusive shortlist: this page picks the region, that one picks the hotel.

What Is the Cheapest but Safest Country to Visit?

Portugal, on this table. Madeira is the cheapest published week of any country carrying no FCDO advisory against travel anywhere within it, at £481 per person bed and breakfast for 30 November 2026 (as of September 2026, sources: Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Hays Travel). Malta is four pounds behind at £485, and Spain, also advisory-free, comes in at £509.

Three countries here carry advisories, and the detail matters more than the headline. Türkiye's applies within 10km of the Syria border, roughly 700km from Antalya (advice updated 22 July 2026). Egypt's covers North Sinai, part of South Sinai beyond the St Catherine to Nuweibaa road and part of the Western Desert; Hurghada and the Red Sea coast are not in an advisory area (advice updated 4 August 2026). Mexico's names specific states and cities; Quintana Roo, where Cancún sits, is not among them (advice updated 16 July 2026, source for all three: Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office).

Travelling against FCDO advice can invalidate your insurance, so read the regional map, not the banner. Check the country page again the week before you fly.

Half-Term and Christmas: When the Grid Changes

Two windows do most of the damage to a winter-sun budget, and they hit the grid differently. The Christmas fortnight lands while the short-haul rows still hold some November warmth: best value on paper, worst on price. February half term lands at the coldest point of the grid for every European row, Majorca at 15.4°C, Malta 15.5°C, the Algarve 16.7°C (as of September 2026, sources: Agencia Estatal de Meteorología and World Meteorological Organization).

So the February shortlist is a different list from the December one. Only six destinations here reach 22°C in February, and five are more than five hours away. Term dates vary by nation and council, so confirm yours against our UK school holidays guide first, and use our month-by-month booking guide for how far ahead your window needs booking. A dedicated February half term abroad guide is in production.

Which Winter Sun Destination Is Right for Your Family?

Four constraints, four answers.

You have one week and it's February

Ignore the mainland rows. The Canaries at 22.0°C are the only sub-five-hour group that still feels like a sun holiday, and Sal at 24.1°C is the shortest flight to anything in the mid-20s. Start with the Canary Islands guide, which makes its own February call between the four islands.

You have toddlers and a transfer limit

The Costa del Sol and the Algarve are 3h 10m and 3h 00m from Manchester with short airport-to-resort runs. You're trading heat for a manageable travel day, which with a two-year-old is usually right.

Budget is the binding constraint

Madeira at £481 is the cheapest published week here, and 3.6°C warmer than Malta in February. Malta at £485 and Antalya at £504 come next, but check the month first: both are among the coldest February rows on the grid, and Antalya is the coldest January row of the 14.

Someone in the family will only be happy in the sea

That means eight hours or more, or Cape Verde at five. Price the whole trip in the family budget calculator before you call the flight affordable.

Our take

Madeira takes the top score because it does the unglamorous thing well: 20°C that barely moves from November to February, four hours of flying, the cheapest published week on the table. The Costa del Sol wins if the travel day matters more than the thermometer, Tenerife if you want short-haul warmth you can swim in. Everything past five hours has to be justified by how much your family will use the sea.

Winter packing is where these trips go wrong: 16°C days need a different bag from August.
