What's better, Fiji or Hawaii?

Fiji, for a family flying from Sydney: the same late-May week costs about A$5,750 less than Hawaii (as of October 2026, sources: Qantas Holidays, SpeediShuttle). Each price is the cheapest standard Qantas Holidays room that sleeps two adults and children aged 4 and 12 at an Outrigger beach resort. The table adds what each side charges outside the package.

Sources: Qantas Holidays Hawaii and Fiji, SpeediShuttle, US CBP and Outrigger Fiji, read October 2026, for the weeks from Saturday 29 May and Saturday 3 July 2027. July repeats SpeediShuttle's late-May shuttle fare for four with bags, which matched its 3 July arrival fare. Outrigger Fiji has no resort charge, and its airport car adds a fuel surcharge. Qantas Holidays' bedding rule covers children 2 to 11, so we priced the 12-year-old as an adult.

US$ and NZ$ convert at the RBA's 16 October 2026 rates (A$1 = US$0.6947 or NZ$1.2285). FJ$ converts at the Reserve Bank of Fiji's (FJ$1 = A$0.6374). A$11,579 is about NZ$14,200 or US$8,040. A$5,834 is about NZ$7,170 or US$4,050.

Neither is an all inclusive resort package: breakfast adds about A$830 to A$1,050 a week on either side, so the gap survives meals. If your week's budget stops below about A$11,600, book Fiji and spend the difference on boat days.

Do you need a visa for Hawaii or Fiji?

Australian, New Zealand, Singaporean and British citizens need an ESTA for Hawaii, for stays up to 90 days. Fiji needs no visa for any passport in the table. The table sorts the rules by passport.

Sources: Air New Zealand, Fiji Airways, Hawaiian Airlines and Virgin Australia booking engines, US CBP ESTA and Fiji Immigration, read October 2026. Hawaiian may add bag fees, and Virgin Australia's Economy Lite fares carry no checked bag. We dropped the Singapore row because Singapore Airlines' site showed no flights to Honolulu for 29 May 2027.

What it means for you: if your youngest still naps, the 3h 10m Auckland flight or the 4h 5m Sydney one makes Fiji the easier week.

Is Hawaii kid friendly?

Yes, for sightseeing: Hanauma Bay lets children 12 and under in free (as of October 2026, source: City and County of Honolulu). A non-resident adult pays US$25 plus an online fee. USS Arizona Memorial tickets at Pearl Harbor are free, with a US$1 booking fee on Recreation.gov.

A 4-year-old gets more from Fiji, where Outrigger Fiji's free Little Riggers club takes ages 3 to 7. A 12-year-old fits its Beach Riggers club for ages 8 to 12. If your youngest is 4, pick Fiji; at 12, Hawaii's days out earn their cost.

When Fiji wins and when Hawaii wins

Fiji wins for children under 8 and for tight budgets; Hawaii wins for older children who want big days out. Fiji trades sightseeing for pool and reef days, and Hawaii trades the short flight and kids club for days out.

When the answer flips: kids 8 and older, and July

Age flips the answer, and July only narrows the gap, from about A$5,750 to about A$3,110 (as of October 2026, sources: Qantas Holidays, SpeediShuttle). The July week costs about A$11,800 for Fiji and about A$14,900 for Hawaii, inside Hawaii's official hurricane season. If your kids are 8 or older and you can only travel in the July holidays, price Hawaii before you book Fiji.

Source: Qantas Holidays July packages for Hawaii and Fiji, read October 2026, with the fees and transfers from the cost table.

The trap: three Hawaii costs the package leaves out

The Qantas Holidays total for Hawaii leaves out the resort fee, the ESTAs and the airport shuttle, about A$1,130 (as of October 2026, sources: Qantas Holidays, US CBP). The resort fee is US$59.35 a night, paid at the hotel and subject to change.

For the room alone, check Outrigger's own site first, since Outrigger Fiji's Kids Eat Free needs a direct booking. Then open Expedia in a second tab for Waikiki or the Coral Coast, and book the cheaper room.

Covered valet parking at Outrigger Waikiki is US$62.83 a day on the Qantas Holidays listing, subject to availability. If you plan to hire a car on Oahu, add about A$633 a week in valet parking alone, before the hire itself.

When to go: storm seasons and school holidays

Go to Fiji between May and October, its dry season, and to Hawaii outside its June to November hurricane season (as of October 2026, sources: Tourism Fiji, NOAA). Fiji's cyclone season runs November to April, and the Fiji Meteorological Service says cyclones have occasionally formed in October and May. Hawaii's season officially starts on 1 June, though storms can form at any time.

Late May is school term in New South Wales and New Zealand, so school-holiday families from there should price July. England's May half term, 31 May to 4 June 2027 in Camden, falls inside our late-May week. The table sets both sides against nine school breaks.

If your children are at school in Sydney or Auckland, price the July week. Otherwise book late May, the cheaper of our two dry-season weeks.

Our take

Fiji beats Hawaii for a family of four from Sydney: about A$5,830 against about A$11,600 for an all-in late-May week (as of October 2026, sources: Qantas Holidays, SpeediShuttle). The flight is under half as long. Book Fiji when the youngest is under 8 or the budget is tight.

Book Hawaii when the kids are 8 or older and you want days out; in July the gap narrows to about A$3,110, inside Hawaii's official hurricane season. Price your dates in the Family Budget Calculator, then pick a resort in our Fiji family resorts guide. To skip the passport, see our best family destinations in Australia.
