Tunisia Family Holiday vs Turkey: Look at the Hotel First

Quick answer

Which is better for a holiday, Tunisia or Turkey?

At the resorts we priced, Tunisia has the lower bill and shorter flight; Turkey has the slides but a 01:25 landing home. The table compares both weeks line by line.

Price your own Antalya hotel quote

Got an Antalya hotel quote under £1,970 for four for the May week? Turkey wins. Test yours.

Test your Antalya hotel quote against £1,970 Price a Sousse week for four

Check Iberostar and Accor first, then the same dates on Expedia (Sousse hotels, Antalya hotels), and book whichever tab is cheaper.

If price matters most, book Tunisia; if your 10-year-old wants slides, book a Turkish resort we priced. If your youngest still naps, the 13:40 Enfidha landing beats a 01:25 one.

Is Tunisia cheaper than Turkey?

Yes, at the beach resorts we priced: Tunisia's May week cost about £1,220 less, because its hotel cost about £1,540 less while TUI's Antalya flights were about £320 cheaper. The table shows the hotel line is where the gap comes from: both totals are all-inclusive weeks (a resort package, in US terms), before transfers and hotel tax.

Club Med's rooms: Superior at Palmiye, Standard at Djerba in August. European Central Bank, 16 October 2026 (€1 = £0.84385 = US$1.1253). Party: two adults, children aged 6 and 10. Weeks: 7 nights from 29 May and 31 July 2027.

Tunisia's May week is about €5,760 or US$6,480 (ECB rate, 16 October 2026).

Accor's five Antalya all-inclusive May rates, all Rixos, ran from €3,269 (Rixos Downtown Antalya, a city hotel) to €6,462 (Rixos Premium Belek). If your 6 and 10-year-old would be happy at a 3 or 4 star resort, price that package in the Budget Calculator: we priced only 5-star resorts.

The hotel price that flips it to Turkey

Turkey wins the May half-term week if your Antalya all-inclusive costs under £1,970 for four (as of October 2026, sources: TUI, Iberostar).

If all four pay Tunisia's hotel tax, Turkey wins the May week with an Antalya hotel under about £2,060. In August, before tax, it needs one under about £2,780. A £2,400 Antalya hotel quote for May? Book Tunisia; under £1,970, book Turkey.

Read on TUI's and Iberostar's sites, the FCDO and Tunisia's central bank, October 2026.

When Tunisia wins

Tunisia wins if you have under £5,600 for May half term, have a child who travels badly, or want Club Med in August.

If one fits, book Tunisia. Prices read on TUI's, Iberostar's, Accor's and Club Med's sites, October 2026.

When Turkey wins

Turkey wins with an Antalya hotel quote under £1,970 for the May week, a child who wants slides, or teens who need a half-term club.

If one fits, book Turkey, hotel first. Prices read on TUI's, Iberostar's, Accor's and Club Med's sites, October 2026.

What does the cheaper week give up?

The cheaper Tunisian week gives up slides, Djerba's half-term teen clubs and about £85 in hotel tax.

If none of the three matters to your family, book the Tunisian week. Read on Club Med's and Iberostar's sites and the FCDO, October 2026.

Two traps: the Tunisian hotel tax and a Friday flight

Tunisia charges a hotel tax of 12 dinars a person a night at 4 and 5 star hotels, for up to ten nights (as of October 2026, source: FCDO). At 5-star Kantaoui Bay, seven nights come to 336 dinars, about £85, if all four pay. If only the adults pay, it's 168 dinars, about £42.

The FCDO doesn't say whether children pay, and Iberostar's "Taxes included" doesn't name it, so ask in writing.

Book Djerba Saturday to Saturday through Club Med: TUI's cheapest Gatwick week runs Friday to Friday at £492 each. Friday 28 May is Lambeth's last day of term, so that outbound flight misses a school day. For Djerba, ask Club Med to price its flights: it includes transfers only "When you book your flights with Club Med". Read on the FCDO's, Iberostar's, TUI's, Club Med's, Lambeth Council's and BCT's sites, October 2026.

Getting there and getting in

The flight and the transfer, not the passport, are what change between the two countries.

Sousse vs Antalya and Dalaman

Kantaoui Bay is 25 km from Monastir Airport. On the Turkish coasts, Dalyan has the shortest road: 9 km from Dalaman to Ortaca, Dalyan's district centre (KGM), as our Turkey family holidays guide shows. With a coach-hating child, pick Dalyan or Belek; for Kantaoui Bay, ask TUI how long the Enfidha transfer takes. The table shows the road from each airport to its resort towns, so you can pick the shortest transfer.

Flying from four airports

TUI sold half-term seats from Gatwick, Manchester and Bristol to both countries; Birmingham's Antalya seats sold out. Near Birmingham, book TUI's Enfidha week; from Edinburgh, look past TUI. The table shows which home airport gives the cheaper half-term fare to each country.

From Dublin, Ryanair had no Tunisia route and no Turkey fares on sale for April to June 2027. Edinburgh dropped (no TUI Antalya week on sale, Enfidha not searched); Edinburgh Airport lists Jet2.com, SunExpress and easyJet to Antalya. Transavia sells Paris Orly to Djerba from €86 and Monastir from €83, one way, Basic fare, no hold bag, no dates given.

Visas and passports for both countries

British citizen, Irish, US, Canadian and Singaporean passports need no visa for either country. Türkiye also exempts Australian and New Zealand ones for up to 90 days. The table shows entry rules by passport for both countries.

When to go, by school calendar

Go in August for the lower price and in May half term for milder heat: our August weeks cost £215 less for Tunisia and £573 less for Turkey.

If your children struggle in heat, book May half term: Antalya's mean high is 25.4°C, not 33.7°C. If price leads, book August. We didn't price October half term or late September. The table shows which priced week fits each school calendar.

Our take

Book Tunisia: with TUI's flights, our beach resort pair cost a family of four £858 to £1,216 less than Turkey (as of October 2026, sources: Iberostar, Accor). The hotel made the gap.

Turkey is the runner-up: book it with any Antalya hotel quote under £1,970 for May. Price your dates in the Budget Calculator, then pick a coast with our Turkey family holidays guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better for a holiday, Tunisia or Turkey?

At the beach resorts we priced, Tunisia is the better-value pick for a family of four, because its hotel bill was lower. Turkey's resorts we priced are better for waterslides or aqua parks, which Palmiye and Sungate list between them.

Is Tunisia a good holiday destination for families?

Yes, for a beach week: at the 5-star beach resorts we priced, a family of four would pay less than in Turkey (as of October 2026, sources: TUI, Iberostar). Iberostar Kantaoui Bay's kids club takes ages 4 to 12, so it suits primary-age children.

Is Tunisia or Turkey safer?

The FCDO doesn't rank Tunisia and Turkey, and it advises against neither country's main resort areas (as of October 2026, source: FCDO). Its warnings cover Turkey within 10 km of Syria and Tunisia's border and mountain zones, and for Turkey it flags possible flight cancellations from Middle East tensions. The FCDO says terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in both countries.

Is Tunisia cheaper than Turkey?

At the 5-star beach resorts we priced, Tunisia was cheaper for a family of four (as of October 2026, sources: Iberostar, Accor). We priced neither at 3 or 4 star package level. A May half-term week with TUI's flights cost about £4,860 against Turkey's £6,080 before transfers and hotel tax, and an Antalya hotel under £1,970 would flip it.
