Step 1: Book the December 19 flights from New York

Book Delta's New York to Accra nonstop for Saturday, December 19: $2,490 a seat in Main Basic (as of October 2026, source: Delta Air Lines). That is $296 less a seat than the week after Christmas. The 4:55 p.m. departure lands at 7:35 a.m., so a 6-year-old who sleeps on planes arrives ready for one Accra stop.

Step 2: Book the Elmina villa and the airport car

Book Lemon Beach Resort's Family Design African Villa in Elmina, posted at $333 a night with breakfast (as of October 2026, source: Lemon Beach Resort). Do it before the visas, which ask where you'll stay.

Spend Christmas night in Accra: the flight leaves at 9:45 a.m., and the FCDO says to "avoid travelling by road outside the main towns after dark". Labadi Beach Hotel is 10 minutes from the airport, and its rooms sleep 2 at $320 a night, so book two.
The FCDO lists the Labadi beach area among Accra roads where police have highlighted a risk to vehicles, and it tells drivers to keep windows up and doors locked. Ride there in Lemon's car in daylight and do the same.
Lemon's Honda CR-V does both runs at $180 each way for up to 4, paid to the driver; confirm the Nkrumah Park stop and the December 25 Accra run. A solo parent with two kids fits the CR-V with room for bags. Intercity STC's coach to Cape Coast costs GH₵115 a seat one way, about 3 hours 24 minutes, no child fare published. Four seats are about $39, but after an overnight flight we'd take the car.

Step 3: Ghana visa for US citizens: post embassy forms by early November, or pay for Rush

Post the four embassy applications and passports by early November: the standard visa takes 15 to 20 business days from receipt (as of October 2026, source: Ghana's Washington embassy).

Late? Rush costs $100 a person and takes 7 business days, so a packet in Washington by about December 1 beats the eVisa. The eVisa needs 6 months' passport validity and 3 blank pages.
Each child needs a birth certificate copy and a consent letter notarized by both parents. For the host letter, Lemon is "ready to help you with the invitation letter".
Ghana requires a yellow fever certificate from 9 months. CDC's October 16, 2026 notice reports a yellow fever outbreak in the Upper West Region, which this plan doesn't visit. The notice tells travelers to that region to get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel.
CDC also "recommends that travelers going to Ghana take prescription medicine to prevent malaria". Some of these medicines start days before the trip. Book one clinic visit for all four.
Step 4: Things to do in Accra with kids on arrival morning

Spend the arrival morning at Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, where non-Ghanaians pay GH₵100 an adult and GH₵30 a child (as of October 2026, source: Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park). Phone ahead: its hours page says 10 a.m. Sundays, its FAQ 8:30 a.m. daily, and the fees are "subject to upward review at any time". At the airport, bring a Visa card and cedis and meet only your booked driver: the FCDO warns of fake drivers, ATM skimming and Mastercard being "not widely accepted".
The National Museum and Osu's Christiansborg Castle open at 9 a.m. daily; skip James Fort and Ussher Fort, closed since December 2025. After an overnight flight with a 6-year-old, pick one stop, then drive to Elmina before dark: the FCDO says to travel in daylight hours on longer trips outside major cities.

Step 5: See Cape Coast and Elmina castles on two mornings

Give each castle its own morning: both open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily (as of October 2026, source: Ghana Museums and Monuments Board). Cape Coast's 45-minute guided tour covers the dungeons, the condemned cell and the Door of No Return. The board says it revised its fees but prints only the old table, GH₵80 a non-Ghanaian adult and GH₵20 a primary pupil; carry more cedis.
The Ghana Tourism Authority says Ghana's 2019 Year of Return marked 400 years since the first enslaved African arrived in Jamestown, Virginia. Tell a 6-year-old beforehand what the rooms were for; let a 10-year-old take the full tour.

Step 6: Walk Kakum National Park's 89-foot canopy, or use its children's park
December 23 · a full day
Kakum has two walks: a canopy walkway of 7 suspension bridges and a children's park with a "super mini canopy walkway" (as of October 2026, source: Ghana Tourism Authority). Take a 10-year-old across the big one and a nervous 6-year-old to the children's park. The canopy walkway is 1,093 feet (333 meters) long and hangs up to 89 feet (27 meters) above the forest floor.
The park is about 21 miles (33 km) north of Cape Coast, and the Wildlife Division puts the walkway at "almost 500m". The park opens 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Lemon posts its $55 return transport with no unit and "entry fee excluded"; reserve on WhatsApp, confirm it covers four, and carry cedis for the gate. If your youngest still naps, arrive for the 6 a.m. opening and be back in Elmina by lunch.
