Family Trip Cost Ledger 2026 card: how many ranked family trips fall in each cost-per-night band, flights included against flights excluded

Quick Answer

This page lines up every whole-trip total our guides have priced, and 27 of them come in under $2,000 at the low end as of September 2026, priced between February 2026 and September 2026 and each linked to its source sentence. The cheapest of all is not a beach. Read the table, then put your own dates into the Family Budget Calculator.

Low-end totals in this table run from $465 to $600. Figures in brackets are conversions at European Central Bank reference rates of 2026-09-07, not quoted prices. Per night divides the low-end USD total by the nights shown; a guide that states days is read as one night fewer and the table shows both. Every row is priced for a family of four as its guide words it, and the CSV keeps the wording. Basis says whether the guide built the total from its own line items (assembled), gave it as a plain figure it does not build up (stated), took it from a time-limited deal (deal), or gave a lead-in price, and a "+" keeps an open-ended high end. Priced is the month the guide attaches to the figure, or the month the guide was last verified when it gives none. Hover a row for the source sentence.

How the ledger was built

We exported every published guide on this site in September 2026, 409 articles in all, and pulled out each sentence or table row that states what a trip, a ticket, a hotel week or a package costs, and the place it prices. A line survives only if its numbers appear word for word in the guide, so nothing here is rounded, averaged or estimated by us. Each line keeps its place, party, length, currency, low and high figure, priced month, named source and the sentence itself.

The lines are ranked together through a USD equivalent at European Central Bank reference rates of 2026-09-07, which we mark as derived. A line enters the ranking only if it prices a whole trip for a family of four, for at least two nights, at a named destination: a resort, a city, a park or a whole-country itinerary. Each eligible line was re-read against its passage, then against its whole article, to record what the figure covers, whether flights are in and from where, how the guide reached the total (the Basis column: assembled from its own line items, stated plainly, a time-limited deal, or a lead-in price) and any stated night count; a guide that states only days is read as one night fewer, with both shown. Ticket-only figures, room rates, ceilings and worked examples left the ranking and stay in the download with the reason. Finally, every line chosen for this page was read by hand against the live guide on 8 September 2026: the figure, the nights, the party, what it covers and the flights. Only lines that passed that read rank; lines that failed it, and lines never read by hand, stay in the download unranked. Table 2 carries the count at each step.

Each destination then appears once on its lowest verified total, and the other whole-trip lines for the same destinations stay in the download. A gateway town folds into its park, a neighborhood or resort tier into its island or city, and a resort brand into its destination, but a state or country itinerary keeps its own row beside the cities inside it. Regions follow the country, so Hawaii sits in North America and Mexico's Caribbean coast with the rest of Mexico; cruises have no country and stay out of the region table. There is no other filter: no minimum price, no cap, no editorial pick, and no five-factor score, since a ledger of stated totals ranks on one measured value.

Confidence is recorded per guide: high where the figures sit in a clear cost table, medium or low where the total had to be read out of prose. The CSV carries that column, a stable row identifier, the covers text, every reading of the flights flag and the hand-check date.

Which region prices lowest by the night

Oceania has the lowest median cost per night among the regions with ranked trips, at $206 across 4 trips, against a median low-end total of $1,443 (as of September 2026, source: Endless Travel Plans ledger). The cheapest single row by the night is Vietnam at about $122, which is a different answer from the cheapest total because it runs 10 nights with flights excluded.

The six most expensive family trips

Muonio, Finland tops the ranked ledger at £6,956 for 3 nights, which is 20.2 times the cheapest row (as of September 2026, source: Endless Travel Plans ledger). Gold Coast, Australia's whole week, $1,082, is less than one night at Muonio, Finland, $3,137 by the night. This table takes the same one-row-per-destination set as Table 1 and reads it from the other end, so the most expensive trip in a region here is the same row Table 3 names.

Flights in or flights out

The trip length where the flag moves the median most is 7 nights or more: the median trip of 7 nights or more with flights in the total is $3,789 against $1,962 without, across 18 and 10 ranked rows (as of September 2026, source: Endless Travel Plans ledger). No row is left unstated: where the sentence and its passage were silent, the whole article was read for the flag. The median low-end total with flights is $3,463 and without them it is $999, a difference of $2,464 (as of September 2026, source: Endless Travel Plans ledger). That difference is bigger than the $8 median step between neighboring rows in Table 1, which is why the ledger keeps the two flags apart.

22 of the 27 flights-included rows name a departure market (UK 12, US 4, Australia 4, South Korea 2); the rest say only that airfare is in. 18 are priced from outside the United States because the guide was written for that market, and their airfare is not a US fare, so a US family should read them as flights-excluded rows and add their own fares.

Filter by what you can't change

Most families start from a fixed constraint, not a destination: a hard budget, a fixed week, or whether airfare is already in. These lists cut the ranked rows by those constraints, minus rows whose airfare is priced from outside the United States.

Our take

The ledger says two things the Cost Index can't. First, real trips spread far wider than destinations do: 20.2 to 1 from top to bottom of the ranked set, driven by nights, what the total covers and flights more than by where you go. Second, the cheapest whole trips cluster in a few places, and Grand Canyon, United States at $465 sits at the bottom because its guide priced a trip of 2 nights with flights not included. If your budget is fixed, sort by length, covers and flights before you sort by destination.

Start with the Family Vacation Cost Index if you want one basket priced the same way in 28 cities, then come back here for what real trips cost, and let the Family Budget Calculator turn any row into your own dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a family trip cost in 2026?
Across the 56 hand-verified whole-trip totals for a family of four in this ledger, the median low-end figure is $2,340, and the low ends run from $465 at Grand Canyon, United States to $9,412 at Muonio, Finland (September 2026, source: Endless Travel Plans ledger). Whether flights are included changes the total more than the destination does, so check the flights column before comparing two rows.
What is the cheapest family vacation in the ledger?
Grand Canyon, United States at $465 for 2 nights for a family of four, with flights not included (September 2026, source: Endless Travel Plans ledger). By the night, Vietnam is cheapest at about $122.
Where do the numbers come from?
Every line is a figure stated in one of 409 published Endless Travel Plans guides, extracted with the sentence it came from and kept only when its numbers appear word for word in the guide. Each ranking-eligible line was then read again against the surrounding passage to record what it covers and whether flights are in. The guide names its own sources, from official rate cards to operator prices, and each ledger row links back to it. The ledger was compiled in September 2026.
How were foreign currencies converted?
The ledger keeps each figure in the currency the guide used, across 9 currencies. The USD figures are conversions at European Central Bank reference rates of 2026-09-07, added so rows can be sorted together. They are derived numbers and not quoted prices.
Can I reuse the data or embed the table?
Yes. The CSV and JSON are published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license, so any site or newsroom can reuse them with a link back to this page. The embed script on this page drops a sortable copy of the table into any article with two lines of HTML, and every build is also kept at a versioned file name that never changes.
How is this different from the Family Vacation Cost Index?
The Cost Index is a fixed basket: 28 destinations priced on one method for one week. The ledger is the raw record of every trip total our guides have stated, in many trip lengths and currencies. Use the Index to compare destinations on equal terms and the ledger to see what a specific trip was priced at.

Data Sources and Verification

Every figure on this page is computed from the ledger file at build time, and every ledger line is a figure stated in a published Endless Travel Plans guide, kept with the sentence it came from and re-read against its passage. The guides name their own sources. The ranked rows link to their guide in Table 1 and Table 4 and in the CSV url column.

Prices were verified in the month each guide states and change without notice. USD figures for non-dollar rows are conversions, not quoted prices. Rows priced for a party other than a family of four, lines that price a ticket, a room or a ceiling rather than a whole trip, and lines not read by hand against the live guide, do not enter the ranking and say so in the download.
